Our Empty Nest - Just Got Emptier

Almost 17 years ago, our daughter brought home this little, tiny ball of fluff. It was a Persian kitten, just old enough to leave his mother. She named him Merlin. I won’t pretend that Hubby and I were happy about this, but that didn’t last long.

Merlin just had this way of warming our hearts. So much so, that when our daughter left the nest and couldn’t take Merlin with her, we were very happy to keep him. It was at that point he became officially ours, even though we had already thought of him as ours.

Over the last 8 years, our empty nest consisted of Hubby, Mer and me. One of our nicknames for Merlin was Tweener. If we were at the kitchen table – he sat there at our feet, right between us. When we watched TV, he was either in Joe’s lap or sitting right between us. At bedtime – you probably guessed, he liked to sleep right between us.

On Friday, we had to say goodbye to Merlin. The first few days were almost unbearable. We are doing better, but still have our Mer-Moments. I know we will always miss this sweet little kitty cat and the way he use to tap on our shoulders or legs when he wanted to get our attention. However, those tiny taps were nothing compared to the precious paw prints he left on our hearts.

  1. Carol, I left a comment on KK Groupies, but came here to read the story. These furry friends really lodge in our hearts, don't they? I hope your happy memories soon replace the sorrow, although I understand how long it can take. when I lost my Max-pup, it took me five years to be ready for Kobi. And you know how much he is a part of me. Be easy with yourself.

  2. Ohh, so very sad.... My heart aches for you....
They mean so much, those little faithful friends of ours, and it is the hardest thing to let them go, but that is an act of love too, and he will always be there, in your hearts.
Thank you very much Carol for your visit and kind words on my blog, most appreciated!
    Have a nice weekend!
