It’s been a bit of a journey to reach my word for this year. This is only my third year of selecting a word to grow with throughout a year. The first two years were good, but left me wanting more. Late last year, I hear of the My One Word method – Christian based method for a yearlong word journey. I bought the book in the fall and from about Thanksgiving on, I prayerfully considered my 2016 word. I felt it was between two possibilities. Yet, on New Year’s Day – I still didn’t know which it would be.
Then it happened! During the middle of the first week, I felt that I was lead to my 2016 word. It was neither of the two I had thought it would be. The word was HEAR. Hear! Hear? Really? For many reasons, this just didn’t make since to me. So, back to prayer I go…
Lord, are you sure about this? After all, I am a gal who is totally deaf in one ear. At best, I can only half hear. Maybe I should be reconsidering the other two words. I’m just not sure I’m hearing you right. Amen
With that Amen, I head off to check email for my four morning devotions. I read the first…it’s about celebrating. Ah – now that’s good for yearlong consideration. The next three devotions, wait for it….all about hearing. All three of them!
OK, Lord. I got it. My word for 2016 is HEAR. Thank you.
Still, another week goes by. I find myself questioning the Lord again. Back to prayer I head…
Lord, maybe I misunderstood. Do you mean that I should focus my year on the word Listen? They are really different things, as You know. Per chance I’m off the mark a bit.
Then I do a little more reading from My One Word. The entire chapter is about being open to HEAR what God is telling you though your little word. I’m happy to say, I am done questioning Him about this being the word for me.
The next thing that’s suggested is to keep your word in from of you – so you don’t forget about it. That’s been easy to do in prior years. There is a plaque on my desk for a past word and charm on my necklace too. But for the word Hear… As I mentioned above, I am deaf in one ear. When someone says ‘turn a deaf ear’, I have no trouble doing so. On the other hand, when I’m at the dentist or doctor, they are usually on my bad ear side. And they talk in their clinical voices (that’s even quieter than using an indoor voice). I’ve often joked about having earrings made that have good ear and bad ear inscribed on them. Just to serve as a little reminder to them that I’m not ignoring them when they speak to me.
Also needed is a Bible verse to keep in view – another way to remember the little word. I did look up Hear in my Bible’s concordance and found that there are 21 references for Hear, Heard, Hearing and Hears. Before I had a chance to read these verses, the verse I selected found me.
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:27 ESV (emphasis added)
So, I’m happy to say, me and my one word are moving forward through 2016 together. I will try to post monthly updates of our journey over this year. If you would like to learn more about the My One Word project, you check out their website here.
Do you have a word journey that you’re doing for 2016? If so, I would love to hear about it.
